Our mission is to alleviate “Substance Use Disorder” by providing recovery/sober living housing that will help recovering addicts grow to self-sufficient members of society.
Our Vision
Our 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is called Amazing Grace Manor. My team’s mission is to open and operate multiple recovery/sober living homes in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas catering to both men and women.
Our vision is to provide a nurturing environment for 8-12 residents per home to aid them in their recovery. It’s been proven that sober living homes increase rates of recovery, and lower risks of relapse. You can help!
We are opening recovery/sober living homes where we will strive to maintain a respectful, faith based, environment built on love, honesty and trust. Our focus is on our residents’ healing and growth and will include those core principles that are important to us.
We know that when people in recovery have accountability and pursue their optimal wellness, they revive and thrive! The belief is that each individual has unique and specific needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Optimal wellness is achieved when an individual is proactively working to maintain balance in their spirit, soul and body.
Our homes will provide clients with accountability and access:
- Recovery meetings will be required on a weekly basis either within the home or nearby (this is monitored with an app called "OneStep" or "Behave" that shows when the client is at a meeting)
- Random drug testing
- Financial resources – money management education and coaching
- Educational coaching
- Job/career coaching
- Exercise / Nutritional / Health coaching
- Job duties within the home
- Sponsor/Mentor weekly updates
- Expressive Arts Coaching
Business Goals and Objectives
Although opening recovery/sober living homes is the end goal, before that can happen there are many activities that the organization needs to perform for that to happen.
Over the last several years, the founder Debbie Engler, has been networking and building relationships within the rehabilitation community including Changing Lives Center, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Phoenix Dream Center, and Teen Challenge, just to name a few. They are continuously looking for reliable, safe homes to refer their clients’ to.
Debbie has also been building relationships with recovery community organizations such as Parents of Addicted Loved Ones, Partnership to End Addiction, Celebrate Recovery, Alanon, and Naranon. These are all great resources for referring clients back and forth to each other. Just one more way we help each other save lives and build a stronger community.
I’m Debbie, a mother, daughter, sister and friend, as well as businesswoman. I have seen firsthand the destruction that drugs and/or alcohol addiction can cause. I’ve had close family members battle the demons of Substance Use Disorder, and saw the physical and emotional toll it took on them and all of us who love them.
I grew up in a very nice area of Phoenix, Arizona called Arcadia. We were a happy family of 5. Our parents were still very, very, happily married for 52 years at the time of my mothers passing in 2006. I couldn't have asked for a better or more loving upbringing. Through the years if I had my choice to hang with family or friends, I would choose family anytime. We all really loved each other and always had so much fun together. We appreciated our lives.
I was blessed with a beautiful, amazing daughter. Raising her has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I followed in my parents foot steps into the real estate business. I am passionate about my career and love every single client I have helped through the years.
In 2006 I learned my daughter was using heroin. I fell to my knees, crying, when I found out.. I thought that was the worst day of my life. Little did I know that over the next 13 years it was going to get a million times worse. Not long after my daughter, I realized my brother was an addict as well. At one point they were both living on the street. I didn’t know from one day to the next if I would see either of them again.
Through the years I was mostly a social drinker but during this time I found myself using alcohol to self medicate. As I struggled to help my family, I realized I couldn't expect them to quit their drug of choice if I didn't quit mine. I knew I needed every single brain cell to figure out this situation. So I quit drinking alcohol. That was 8.5 years ago. I was blessed that it was just a simple decision for me to make. Most are not that fortunate.
By the grace of God, and after several attempts at getting clean and relapsing many times, my daughter and brother were finally able to achieve sobriety after completing intensive long term inpatient treatment programs.
My daughter has been clean for over 6 years and works in the recovery field. She has been working her way up in a great company helping other addicts and homeless people. I love seeing her beaming face when she talks about how she helps and impacts others. I couldn't be more proud!!
My brother has been clean for over 4 years and works for the same great program that he went through treatment at. He doesn't need to tell me how he inspires others because every time we go to church (or other gatherings) someone is coming up to thank him for changing and saving their life. I see first hand how much of an inspiration he is.. My heart is so full. We are truly blessed!!
As a coping mechanism I became consumed with addiction and recovery. I learned as much as I could about it. Addiction does not discriminate. Most families are affected either directly or indirectly in some way. Addicts work so hard to get clean. But it’s critical that these addicts go to a living situation with some structure and accountability before going right back into the world. They need a home where they are accountable to others to pick up the pieces and thrive in their life. It’s important to have this transitional bridge between rehabilitation and becoming a productive member of society.
Through this process I learned that there were very few affordable places for recovering addicts to live in areas that were safe. With my background in real estate, I decided to expand my focus on creating sober living homes. Another passion is born.
Statistical data proves that there are an enormous number of men and women who are fighting to overcome addiction and struggling to maintain sobriety. Combined with the Fentanyl epidemic, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers are overdosing and dying daily.
We have a critical need in the greater Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ areas to create new sober living spaces for men and women coming out of rehabilitation centers. These recovery/sober living homes act as a transitional bridge from rehabilitating these men and women back to functioning, self-sufficient lives.
Ongoing research by the Arizona Department of Health Services shows that more than five people die every day from opioid overdoses in Arizona. Latest figures show over 7,500 emergency and inpatient visits involving suspected opioid overdoses.
If we can save just 10 people from 1 drug/alcohol encounter per year, we can save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayers' money spent on Emergency and In-Patient Visits for opioid addiction events. That saves money while saving lives. It can be a win-win for the community.
Amazing Grace Manor is aware of steps to regulate the growing Arizona sober living home industry and welcomes the initiative in Phoenix and around the state. Ms. Engler believes that regulating recovery/sober living home operators in Arizona will lead to a healthier, structured environment for the individuals who move to these sober living homes.
Closer to home, the Founder Debbie, regularly receives inquiries through networking, word of mouth, the Amazing Grace Manor website as well as directly from rehabilitation facilities, asking when the homes will be available. Debbie is also a member of several social media groups where people are requesting homes because they cannot find sufficient living environments.
The start-up costs for leasing, furnishing, staffing and maintaining these homes is significant, but I believe with the support of this community we can make it happen. Our recovery community needs more affordable sober living options to set up these recovering addicts for success.
